West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes

Manchester United have opened preliminary talks with West Ham United over a potential summer move for highly rated midfielder Mateus Fernandes as the Premier League side continues reshaping its squad ahead of the new season.

The 21-year-old has emerged as a key target for United’s recruitment team, who view him as a long-term addition to strengthen the club’s midfield options amid ongoing restructuring at Old Trafford.

West Ham are reported to have placed a valuation of around £80 million on the player, reflecting both his importance to the squad and their intent to retain strong negotiating leverage during the transfer window.

Manchester United, however, are not prepared to meet that price tag and are instead exploring alternative structures, including performance-related add-ons and staggered payments to reduce the upfront cost.

The player is understood to be open to a move to Old Trafford, a factor that could influence negotiations if discussions between the two clubs progress beyond the initial contact stage.

West Ham’s internal situation is also being closely monitored, with uncertainty around the club’s leadership and long-term planning potentially shaping their willingness to negotiate major departures this summer.

Competition for Fernandes is expected to be significant, with several top European clubs also monitoring the situation and potentially entering the race if talks advance further.

Manchester United are aiming to avoid a drawn-out transfer saga and are prioritising swift decision-making in order to complete key signings early in the window.

The situation remains at an early stage, with both clubs yet to reach an agreement on valuation, but further discussions are expected as the transfer window progresses.
