Manchester City have agreed a deal with Nottingham Forest to sign England midfielder Elliot Anderson for a guaranteed £116 million, with the transfer now entering its final stages. The agreement follows extensive negotiations between the two Premier League clubs and is expected to be completed once the player undergoes a medical and signs the necessary paperwork.
The 23-year-old informed Nottingham Forest on Thursday that he wanted to leave the club and complete the move to the Etihad Stadium. Sources close to the negotiations indicate that Anderson made it clear Manchester City was his preferred destination after the clubs reached an agreement on the transfer fee.
Anderson is currently with the England national team in the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He is expected to undergo his medical in the US before putting pen to paper on a long-term contract with Pep Guardiola's side, allowing the deal to be completed without interrupting England's tournament schedule.
The £116 million package is understood to be a fixed fee, making it the most expensive signing in Manchester City's history. It also ranks among the biggest transfer fees ever paid for a British footballer, highlighting City's determination to strengthen their midfield ahead of the 2026–27 season.
Manchester City had identified Anderson as their priority midfield target after an impressive campaign with Nottingham Forest. The Premier League champions reportedly saw earlier offers rejected before returning with an improved bid that ultimately convinced Forest to sanction the sale.
Anderson joined Nottingham Forest from Newcastle United in the summer of 2024 and quickly established himself as one of the Premier League's standout midfielders. His consistent performances, energy, passing range and defensive work earned him widespread praise and a regular place in England's senior squad.
The transfer represents a significant financial return for Nottingham Forest, who are set to receive more than three times the amount they paid to sign Anderson two years ago. The club is expected to reinvest part of the record transfer fee as it prepares for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
For Manchester City, Anderson's arrival forms part of the club's efforts to refresh its midfield following recent departures and an ageing core. His versatility, technical ability and work rate are viewed as qualities that fit Maresca's tactical approach.
An official announcement is expected after Anderson successfully completes his medical examination and signs his contract. Once confirmed, the England international will become one of the marquee signings of the summer transfer window as Manchester City continue to reinforce their squad for the new season.
