Relief As Rains Expected Soon

Kenyans can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the Kenya Metrological Department projects rainfall in the coming days.

After a prolonged dry season, the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has cautioned Kenyans that the expected long rains will be depressed.

The weatherman predicts the March-April-May rainy season may not be adequate for agriculture. Farmers are advised to plant short-maturing crops, that do not need much rain and those that could thrive during that period.

Such crops include beans, potatoes, cassava, and vegetables.

Dr. Richard Muita from the Met department says the rains may not be able to phase out the impact of the prolonged drought quickly. Hopes are now resting on an El Nino event predicted to happen late this year.

The weatherman is predicting rainfall in many areas including the Highlands East and West of Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, South and Central Rift Valley, Coast as well as North Western and North Eastern Kenya with isolated storms.

In Nairobi, rains are expected in the third week of March.
