President William Ruto has awarded environmental activist Truphena Muthoni the Head of State Commendation (HSC) medal, recognising her contribution to environmental conservation and climate action. The ceremony took place at State House, where the President praised her efforts in mobilising public support for tree planting and environmental protection.

Muthoni recently drew national attention after completing a 72-hour tree-hugging endurance challenge in Nyeri County. The symbolic act was aimed at raising awareness on deforestation, climate change and the urgent need to protect forests and natural ecosystems. Her action sparked widespread discussion and support across the country, particularly on social media.

In recognition of her advocacy, President Ruto also appointed Muthoni as an ambassador of Kenya’s 15 Billion Tree Planting Campaign, a flagship government programme targeting increased forest cover and restoration of degraded landscapes. The initiative is part of Kenya’s broader climate agenda and environmental sustainability goals.

Government officials said Muthoni’s appointment is expected to help mobilise communities, especially young people, to actively participate in tree planting and conservation activities. Her work has been highlighted as an example of grassroots activism influencing national environmental policy.

While the 72-hour tree-hugging feat has been widely celebrated, confirmation from Guinness World Records is still pending. However, Muthoni already holds recognition for a previous 48-hour tree-hugging record, underscoring her growing influence as one of Kenya’s prominent environmental champions.
