Market decline for pig farmers
Farmers in the country fear production of pork could face further decline due to increased costs on animal feeds.
Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics indicate that the number of pigs slaughtered in 2020 declined by 4.1%, from 413,500 in 2019 to 396,700 last year as hotels and eateries where beef and pork are part of the menu shut down reducing the demand for the commodity.
President Uhuru Kenyatta during Mashujaa Day issued a directive to the National Treasury and the Ministry of Agriculture on a framework that will secure a reduction in the prices of animal feeds and chicken feeds hence expected to be published.
