Veteran gospel musician and advocate for the rights of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Dr. Reuben Kigame, has announced his intention to make a second run for the presidency in 2027. This marks a significant moment, highlighting a PWD's continued pursuit of the nation's highest office and underscoring their rightful place in leadership conversations.
Having been locked out of the 2022 general election due to a signature shortfall, Kigame is not deterred. He sees his renewed bid as a continuation of a journey he began and is now determined to finish.
In a recent interview, Kigame confirmed his plans to be on the ballot, stating, "I’m not hoping, I’m planning to be on the ballot in 2027."
He is preparing for an official campaign launch in the coming weeks. Kigame's bid is presented as a challenge to the current administration, which he accuses of failing to deliver on its promises
A win for PWDs, this candidacy challenges stereotypes and demonstrates that physical disability is not a barrier to political leadership. Having lost his sight at the age of three, Kigame's life journey is a testament to overcoming adversity. His campaign is set to focus on what he calls "character-driven leadership," a core belief that ethical and moral fortitude should be the central consideration when electing leaders at all levels of government, from MCAs to the presidency.
Kigame's political journey has not been without its challenges. Days after filing a petition seeking the prosecution of a government official, he reported receiving a tax claim from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) for KSh 20 million. While PWDs are entitled to tax exemptions, Kigame noted that he has always paid his taxes, calling into question the timing and motive behind the claim.
