National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) Executive Director Harun Hassan has lauded the government’s move to raise the number of Inua Jamii beneficiaries, including those under the Cash Transfer Programme for persons with disabilities requiring 24-hour care support (PWSD-CT).

Speaking in Uasin Gishu County on Wednesday, Hassan, who was accompanying Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection Hon. Florence Bore for spot-checks on the ongoing nationwide scale-up of the Inua Jamii Programme, called for joint efforts to inform beneficiaries of additional forms of support, such as the provision of National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) coverage, to cushion them from high out-of-pocket health expenses.

Hassan further noted that the NCPWD is in conversation with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection for a policy amendment in the future to have the PWSD-CT programme move from household-based to individual-based, which would alleviate the burden of caregivers with more than one dependant with a disability who requires full-time care.

At the same time, CS Bore revealed that the government has been disbursing timely monthly stipends to Inua Jamii beneficiaries, including those under the PWSD-CT programme which she said was in line with the President’s pronouncement during the 2023 Social Protection Conference.

This is the first scale-up exercise of the PWSD-CT programme since the 2015/16 Financial Year.

Head of the Directorate of Social Assistance at the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, Mr. Moses Kamau, called on potential beneficiaries to turn up and be listed before the last day of the exercise on Friday this week.
