NCPWD and KNH Partner for Free Health Services for Persons with Albinism
In a significant joint effort to commemorate International Albinism Awareness Day (held annually on June 13th), the National Council for Persons With Disabilities (NCPWD) has teamed with the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) Dermatology Unit to provide free crucial health services to people with albinism on Wednesday, June 11th, 2025, at the KNH Information Center grounds.
In a social media post by the council, the project intends to give critical support by offering free skin cancer screenings, comprehensive eye care services, and protective gear. This collaboration demonstrates a commitment to tackling the unique health vulnerabilities that people with albinism confront, including their susceptibility to skin cancer due to a lack of melanin and significant vision impairment.
The free screenings and distribution of protective gear will aid in the early detection of skin cancer and provide crucial protection from damaging UV radiation.
Albinism is a congenital condition characterized by the absence or reduction of melanin, a pigment responsible for skin, hair, and eye color. This leads to pale skin, light-colored hair, and reddish or blue-colored eyes.
People with albinism also often experience vision problems, including light sensitivity, nystagmus (involuntary eye movement), and amblyopia ("lazy eye").
Albinism occurs due to a genetic mutation that impairs the body's ability to produce or distribute melanin.
