Nairobi Court Grants Extension of Detention for 'Mathee Wa Ngara' in Drug Case
A Nairobi court has authorized the extension of Nancy Kigunzu's detention, also known as Mathee wa Ngara, for a period of five days, allowing the police to conclude their investigations into a drug trafficking incident. Senior Principal Magistrate Njeri Thuku, stationed at JKIA, ruled on Wednesday that the State's request to continue detaining Kigunzu for five days was justified. Thuku stated, "Upon reviewing the arguments presented by both parties, I am of the opinion that the prosecution's plea to detain the defendant holds merit."
Thuku issued these directives while simultaneously scheduling a hearing for August 28, during which the court will provide further instructions. Kigunzu was apprehended on Monday following an extensive pursuit by detectives. Her arrest occurred shortly after she had approached the court in an effort to prevent her imminent apprehension. She contended that agents from the DCI were attempting to levy fabricated charges against her. In court, Attorney Shanice Maingi conveyed that her client was being unfairly singled out. Maingi emphasized that her client is a law-abiding citizen and expressed bewilderment over the reasons behind the police's pursuit.
"In all my time in Kenya, I have never committed a crime, nor have I engaged in any unlawful activities, either on my own or in collaboration with others. Consequently, I fail to comprehend the rationale behind the police's desire to arrest me," Kigunzu stated in legal documents submitted to the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi.
Following a police raid on her residence in Ngara, during which 26 bags of marijuana, four cartons of rolling materials, and a sum of Sh12.9 million in cash were seized, Kigunzu went into hiding for a week.
