President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday directed that the price of a 2kg packet of maize floor be lowered to Ksh.100 from Ksh.205 across the country.

The Head of State during a national address from State House Nairobi said the move is part of the government’s stimulus program aimed at cushioning Kenyans from the current high cost of living.

The move by the President has received mixed reactions from political leaders to Kenyans.

While some of those who spoke to signs TV termed the decision a welcome relief to the high cost of living, others say it is a political move since it comes days to the general election.

Kenya Kwanza Alliance Presidential Candidate William Ruto and his allies have claimed that the government has reduced the price of Unga because of the forthcoming elections.

The country’s second in command has warned the government against fooling Kenyans with political handouts adding that they ignored implementing the big four agendas during the Uhuruto government which has led to the high cost of living.

On the other hand, Azimio La Umoja – One Kenya presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga says he is the man who intervened to reduce Unga prices in a bid to lower the high cost of living.

Odinga while on a tour in Nakuru on Tuesday criticized Deputy President Ruto for terming the reduction of Unga prices as a political tactic to trick voters in their political direction ahead of the polls.
