The Ksh. 310 billion Lamu port which was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta in May last year has not yet been functional due to lack of capacity to tun the facility as was stated by Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani.

The states of its operation have seen the Kenya government to United Arab Emirates UAE-based logistics company, Dubai Port World, to manage its Lamu Port stating that they are one of the best and have done very well in port management and can be the nation private partners.

The CS, however, noted that the government has not yet committed to an agreement but an MoU to grant private parties the right to run and operate port terminals and infrastructure such as container freight, dry ports and storage facilities. When complete, the ambitious project is set to have 32 berths, 29 of will be financed by the private sector, making it the largest deep-water port in Sub-Saharan Africa.
