Deaf people in Kenya have joined the global community in marking the start of International Deaf Awareness Month (IDAM).

The month-long observance is an opportunity to raise awareness of deafness and the importance of sign language in society.

This year’s theme is “Kenya Where Deaf People Can Sign Everywhere,” which highlights the need for greater access to sign language for deaf people.

Sign language is a natural and essential form of communication for deaf people, and it allows them to fully participate in society.

Deaf people in Kenya face many challenges, including stigma, discrimination, and lack of access to education and employment. IDAM is an opportunity to raise awareness of these challenges and to call for action to address them.

To support IDAM, the government is urged to employ more sign language interpreters in public offices. This would help to ensure that deaf people can access information and services without barriers.

Other ways to support IDAM include learning sign language, volunteering with deaf organizations, and advocating for the rights of PWDs.
