Kenya And Tanzania Pledge Swift Resolution To Air Travel Standoff
Kenya and Tanzania have put aside their differences and agreed to fix the flight issue that grounded planes between Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.
According to transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen, the two countries are neighbours with great economic partnerships, hence a solution will be found.
Tensions arose after Tanzania announced it would suspend all Kenya Airways flights to Dar es Salaam starting January 22nd. This drastic move stemmed from a dispute over cargo operations, as Kenya denied Air Tanzania's request for dedicated cargo flights.
Tanzania's Civil Aviation Authority claims Kenya's refusal violated Section 4 of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on air services signed in 2016. This specific section likely governs reciprocal rights for cargo and passenger flights between the two nations.
On Monday evening Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi, and Tanzania's Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Minister January Makamba, confirmed engaging in direct discussions on the matter.
Their joint commitment, published through social media posts, promises a resolution within three days.
