Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has intensified his public confrontation with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, making a series of strong accusations related to security operations, political conduct, and alleged mobilisation of criminal groups.
Murkomen claimed that police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had arrested more than 300 individuals described as “goons” in operations linked to recent unrest, arguing that the crackdown significantly weakened organised disruption networks.
“DCI na polisi walishika wakora wote ilipita 300. Waliposhikwa sasa yeye akaisha nguvu, hakuna kitu alikuwa anaweza.”
He accused Gachagua of attempting to shift political narratives by taking credit for positive developments while distancing himself from security failures or violence-related incidents.
Murkomen further criticised what he described as inconsistent political messaging, arguing that leadership requires accountability rather than selective attribution of responsibility.
“Sasa anakuja mbele hapo anakuja kusema, 'Mimi niliambia hao watu wanyamaze wasiende siku hii.' Wewe, you are a very stupid man.”
He also alleged that Gachagua repeatedly positions himself as responsible for positive outcomes while blaming others when outcomes are negative, calling the behaviour politically dishonest.
Murkomen escalated his criticism by describing Gachagua as a “foolish” political actor who misrepresents events for personal advantage.
“Yaani kila kitu akiona kitu imeenda mzuri ati, 'Nilikuwa ni mimi,' akienda mbaya anasema ni Murkomen. Yaani, he is a very foolish person.”
The CS further alleged that Gachagua fears him due to knowledge of his political history, including claims linking him to violence, assertions that remain politically contested.
Murkomen also questioned Gachagua’s engagement with public protests, suggesting he avoids direct participation while allegedly influencing events indirectly.
“Umewahi mwona Gachagua amekuja maandamano? Umewahi mwona yeye kwa maandamano? Ah, si anakaanga huko nyuma akituma watoto ya watu?”
He accused the former Deputy President of operating through proxies during demonstrations while distancing himself from street-level political activity.
Murkomen further alleged past incidents involving organised groups and political actors, including claims of coordination around protest movements in different parts of Nairobi.
“Juzi alikuwa anapanga ameweka vijana huko Kariobangi, ameweka wengine hapo Highlands, alikuwa amepanga wengine kwa Thika Road.”
He said security agencies had disrupted such alleged mobilisation efforts and placed suspected individuals under arrest following coordinated operations.
Murkomen maintained that law enforcement operations were ongoing and that intelligence monitoring had intensified across urban areas ahead of the election period.
“Lakini kwa sababu nimejua, huyo Gachagua tulimfungia kwanza yeye akakaa kwa nyumba yake huko kwa Wamunyoro.”
He warned that individuals involved in recruiting or financing criminal gangs would face firm legal consequences regardless of political status.
Murkomen also dismissed allegations that state agencies were involved in violence, insisting that police actions were strictly lawful and targeted at criminal elements.
“Mimi nataka kumwambia Gachagua, tutaonana macho kwa macho na wewe. Wewe unajua vizuri ulipokuwa Deputy President ulikataa kufanya kazi kutumia systems of government.”
He described Gachagua as politically confrontational and accused him of undermining state institutions while in office.
Murkomen further alleged that some actors continue to mobilise youth groups for disruptive purposes, particularly around informal settlements and major transport corridors.
“Na mimi kutoka leo, unajua nimemnyamazia siku mingi eh, na anapenda matusi sana. Ehe, sober eh, kasongo ehe, ajaribu mimi he will...”
He also warned that any individuals involved in organised violence or recruitment of gangs would be dealt with firmly by security agencies.
Murkomen added that Kenya’s security apparatus remains committed to preventing politically linked violence ahead of the 2027 elections.
“Mnataka hivyo ama hamtaki hivyo? Yaani tumepambana na majangili iko na bunduki wamekaa huko Kerio Valley pale mahali.”
He also urged national unity while distancing ethnic communities from political disputes, insisting that no single group should be blamed collectively for individual actions.
Murkomen concluded by asserting that he would continue confronting what he termed political misinformation and criminal influence networks.
“I want to tell Kenyans I will separate Gachagua, who is a bad apple, from the good people of Mount Kenya and Kenya.”
