Josh Cavallo, the Australian footballer who made history in 2021 by becoming the first openly gay active male professional player, has alleged that discrimination based on his sexuality led to his exclusion from the Adelaide United first team.
Cavallo says he was repeatedly left out of matchday squads despite being fit, insisting the decisions were not grounded in football performance but were influenced by what he describes as internal homophobia within the club environment.
He has further claimed that he became aware of teammates mocking a photograph of him and his partner in a private group chat, an incident he says contributed to a hostile atmosphere and left him feeling isolated at the club.
According to Cavallo, the cumulative effect of these experiences had a significant impact on his wellbeing and confidence, raising doubts in his mind about whether coming out publicly had ultimately harmed his professional career.
The midfielder later terminated his contract with Adelaide United, bringing an end to his time at the A-League club after several seasons marked by limited appearances toward the latter stages of his tenure.
Adelaide United has rejected the allegations, maintaining that all team selection decisions were made purely on sporting grounds and reiterating its commitment to inclusivity and support for LGBTQ+ players.
The claims have reignited broader debate about discrimination in professional football, with Cavallo’s case highlighting ongoing concerns about player welfare, inclusion, and the challenges faced by openly gay athletes in elite men’s sport.
