Didier Deschamps Leaves France Camp After Mother’s Death

Didier Deschamps has left the France national team camp following the death of his mother, with the French Football Federation (FFF) confirming his immediate departure. The decision was made to allow him to travel home and attend family arrangements.
The FFF stated that Deschamps received the news while with the squad and departed shortly afterward. The federation described the situation as a personal emergency requiring his absence from team duties.
He will miss France’s final Group I match against Norway as a result of his return to France. His absence comes at a key stage of the tournament group phase.
Assistant coach Guy Stéphan has been appointed interim manager for training sessions and the upcoming match. He is expected to handle all tactical and technical responsibilities during Deschamps’ absence.
The France squad reportedly held a minute of silence at their training base in honour of Deschamps’ mother. The team continued preparations for their next fixture under interim supervision.
France had already secured qualification to the knockout stage before the Norway game, easing competitive pressure on the final group fixture. The match will determine final group standings and seeding positions.
Deschamps has been France head coach since 2012, overseeing multiple international tournaments. His tenure includes consistent qualification for major competition knockout stages.
He led France to the 2018 FIFA World Cup title, marking one of the most successful periods in the nation’s football history. He also guided the team to the 2022 World Cup final.
Under his leadership, France reached the Euro 2016 final and has remained among the top-ranked international sides globally. His coaching record includes multiple deep tournament runs.
The French Football Federation has indicated that Deschamps is expected to return after completing family commitments. No timeline has been provided for his reintegration into the squad during the ongoing tournament.
