Israel Calls Iran Strike Defensive As Envoy In Kenya Brands Khamenei Illegitimate

The government of Israel has described its recent military strike on Iran as a defensive operation, arguing that the action was necessary to counter what it termed escalating security threats. Israeli officials said the move was aimed at protecting national interests amid rising tensions between the two longtime regional rivals.
Speaking in Nairobi, Israel’s Ambassador to Kenya, Gideon Behar, sharply criticised Iran’s leadership and referred to the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as illegitimate. He argued that Tehran’s leadership structure lacked democratic credibility and accused it of pursuing destabilising policies across the Middle East and beyond.
The envoy further alleged that Iran has supported armed groups operating in different regions, including the Somalia-based militant organisation Al Shabaab. He claimed such backing has contributed to insecurity in parts of East Africa, though Iran has consistently denied sponsoring extremist activity in the region.
The remarks come amid heightened hostilities between Israel and Iran, with both sides exchanging accusations over military actions and regional proxy networks. Analysts warn that the increasingly direct rhetoric signals a widening diplomatic rift that could further strain security dynamics across the Middle East and neighbouring regions.
