International Museum Day is an international holiday held every year on the 18th of May to promote the importance of Museums and cultural institutions.

The day aims to raise awareness about the role of museums in society and their contribution to education, cultural exchange, and preservation.

On this day, museums worldwide organize various activities such as exhibitions, guided tours, workshops, and lectures, inviting people of all ages to explore and engage with art, history, science, and diverse cultures. 

The day was officially established during the ICOM General Assembly in Moscow, Russia, and was first observed on May 18, 1977, following the initiative of the International Council of Museums (ICOM). 

Following this year’s theme, “Museums, Sustainability and Well Being,” museums are vital contributors to the well-being and to sustainable development of our communities.

There Are ways in which museums can contribute to achieving sustainable development goals by supporting climate action, handling social isolation, and improving mental health.

On International Museum Day, museums worldwide organize various activities such as exhibitions, workshops, lectures, and tours and invite people to explore art, history, science, and diverse cultures.
