Representatives from Kenya’s informal settlements which include advocates for persons with disabilities are actively supporting the affordable housing fund.

During the ongoing public consultations led by the joint Committee on Finance and National Planning and the Committee on Housing, several representatives spoke out on Monday.

They urged the committee to consider reviewing some of the financial requirements associated with the fund to ensure greater accessibility for persons with disabilities.

While acknowledging the bill’s potential to improve living standards, they call for special provisions for people with disabilities and very low-income earners who may struggle with the proposed deposit requirements for housing units.

The bill seeks to provide a legal framework for establishing an Affordable Housing Fund and give effect to the right to accessible and adequate housing as provided for in the Constitution.

These consultations continue today, with the committee welcoming further input at the Mini Chambers within Parliament Buildings.

The public participation report is expected to be presented in Parliament post-recess, raising hopes for a comprehensive and inclusive affordable housing policy in Kenya.

According to Finance Committee chair Kuria Kimani, the committee will review their input in view to enacting progressive law.
