Aceh Tamiang (Indonesia) (AFP) - Devastating floods and landslides have killed 1,006 people in Indonesia,
Devastating floods and landslides triggered by weeks of torrential rain have killed at least 1,003 people on Indonesia’s Sumatra island, authorities said, as rescue and recovery operations continue across several hard-hit provinces.
The National Disaster Mitigation Agency reported that more than 5,400 people were injured, while 218 others remain missing, raising fears that the death toll could climb further as search teams reach previously inaccessible areas buried under mud and debris.
The disaster has displaced at least 1.2 million residents, forcing families to seek refuge in temporary shelters after homes, roads and public facilities were destroyed or swept away by floodwaters and landslides.
Emergency crews, supported by the military and volunteers, are working to distribute food, clean water and medical aid, while heavy machinery is being used to clear roads and reopen access to isolated communities in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra provinces.
Officials warned that continued heavy rainfall could hamper rescue efforts and worsen conditions, calling the catastrophe one of the deadliest natural disasters to strike the region in recent years as authorities brace for further challenges in the days ahead.
