Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba
The government has dismissed claims of an increase in fees for public secondary and senior schools, stating that the approved fee structure remains unchanged. Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said parents should ignore reports suggesting new or higher charges, noting that no directive has been issued to revise school fees.
Ogamba emphasized that the Ministry of Education continues to support public schools through capitation funding to ensure education remains accessible and affordable. He explained that misinformation had caused unnecessary anxiety among parents, particularly amid ongoing education reforms.
The Cabinet Secretary issued a stern warning to school heads and boards of management against imposing unauthorised levies on learners. He said institutions found charging fees outside the approved guidelines will face administrative and disciplinary action from the ministry.
Ogamba clarified that any additional charges, including development fees or extra levies not sanctioned by the government, are illegal. He urged parents to demand official fee structures from schools and to pay only what has been approved by the ministry.
The ministry further called on parents and guardians to report schools engaging in illegal fee collection to education offices or through established reporting channels. Officials said such reports will be investigated and action taken where violations are confirmed.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting parents from financial exploitation while ensuring smooth learning in public schools, adding that strict compliance with the approved fee policy is mandatory for all institutions.
