Four people have died and four others were rescued after a building collapsed on Monday in the Blue Estate area of Shauri Moyo, Kamukunji Sub-County, Nairobi County, officials confirmed.
The structure, which was earmarked for demolition under the Nairobi River Regeneration Project, gave way during early dismantling operations, trapping several people under the rubble.
Nairobi North County Commissioner Simon Osumba said emergency teams responded immediately, pulling four survivors from the debris, including one who was admitted to hospital with minor injuries.
The Ministry of Interior and National Administration confirmed the fatalities and said search operations were ongoing as authorities work to ensure no one else remains trapped.
Rescue efforts involved personnel from the Kenya Defence Forces, National Police Service, Kenya Red Cross, and National Government Administrative Officers, using heavy machinery to clear the debris.
The collapsed building was located along the riparian zone of the Nairobi River, an area targeted for clearance to remove encroaching structures and revitalize riverbanks.
Local leaders criticized the demolition practices, urging authorities to exercise caution to prevent further loss of life in ongoing clearance operations.
Authorities have warned residents to stay clear of the site and said investigations into the cause of the collapse are underway.
