Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Dies at Age 82

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, a one-time military general who rose to power on an anti-corruption platform, passed away on Sunday at the age of 82.
The Nigerian presidential press office confirmed his death in a statement, announcing that Buhari died in London at approximately 4:30 p.m. local time after a "prolonged illness." The nature of the illness was not disclosed.
Nigeria's current President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressed his deep condolences to Buhari's wife, Aisha Buhari, and ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the former president's body back to Nigeria.
President William Ruto has also sent a message of condolence to the government and people of Nigeria.
In his statement, President Ruto described Buhari’s passing as a great loss not only to Nigeria but to the entire African continent, praising his role in championing anti-corruption efforts, regional security, and economic integration.
Ruto recalled Buhari’s 2016 state visit to Nairobi and his message of congratulations after the 2022 Kenyan election as marks of strong bilateral ties. Kenya stands in solidarity with Nigeria during this time of mourning.
Buhari first served as Nigeria's military head of state from 1984 to 1985 before being democratically elected as president in 2015, serving two terms until 2023. His tenure as president was often marked by efforts to combat corruption and improve security, though it also saw periods of heightened economic challenges and ongoing concerns about his health
