Former Kirinyaga Senator Daniel Karaba has died, an announcement from Kirinyaga County confirmed on Monday, March 23, 2026. The news was shared by Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, who paid tribute to his life and service.

Governor Waiguru described Karaba as a distinguished leader whose life was defined by service to his community, humility and a deep commitment to education and leadership. Her statement acknowledged his contributions to both public service and the education sector.

Daniel Karaba was 78 years old at the time of his death. Details of the cause of his passing have not been publicly disclosed, although preliminary reports suggest he died after a short illness.

Born in 1948 in Kiamaina, Kirinyaga County, Karaba established himself first as an educator before venturing into politics, a path that earned him respect across different sectors of Kenyan society.

Before entering elective politics, Karaba had a long career in education, serving as a teacher and later as a school principal, where he gained a reputation for leadership in secondary schools in central Kenya.

His political career included service as Kirinyaga Central Member of Parliament before he went on to represent Kirinyaga County in the Senate from 2013 to 2017. During his tenure in the Senate, he chaired the Senate Education Committee and played a key role in parliamentary oversight on educational matters.

Colleagues and community leaders have taken to social and traditional media to express condolences, highlighting Karaba’s mentorship, dedication to public service and his influence in shaping education policy and civic leadership.

Former colleagues noted that Karaba’s leadership extended beyond politics into community development, where he worked to improve learning environments and mentor young leaders in Kirinyaga and beyond.

Kirinyaga County is observing a period of mourning as residents and leaders reflect on Karaba’s legacy and decades of public service marked by a commitment to education and governance.

Formal funeral arrangements, including dates and burial details, are expected to be announced by the family and county officials once they are finalised. Authorities and mourners alike are preparing to bid farewell to one of the county’s notable public figures.
