Former Botswana President Festus Mogae has died at the age of 86 after a period of illness, Botswana President Duma Boko announced on Friday. Mogae reportedly died in the early hours of Friday morning.
President Boko described Mogae as a distinguished statesman who dedicated his life to public service and national development. Botswana authorities also announced a period of national mourning in his honour.
Mogae served as Botswana’s third president from 1998 to 2008 after succeeding former president Quett Masire in a peaceful constitutional transition.
Born on August 21, 1939, in Serowe, Mogae grew up during Botswana’s colonial era before the country gained independence from Britain in 1966.
He studied economics at the University of Oxford and later at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom before returning home to help build Botswana’s young economy after independence.
Before joining politics, Mogae worked in Botswana’s civil service and later served at the International Monetary Fund. He also became governor of the Bank of Botswana in the early 1980s.
Mogae entered government leadership in the late 1980s and served as Finance Minister before being appointed Vice President in 1991.
During his presidency, Mogae earned praise for maintaining economic discipline and overseeing Botswana’s diamond-driven economy during a period of steady growth.
He became internationally recognised for his leadership during Botswana’s HIV/AIDS crisis, at a time when the country had one of the highest infection rates in the world.
Under his administration, Botswana expanded access to anti-retroviral treatment and launched aggressive HIV prevention campaigns that later became a model for other African countries.
Mogae frequently spoke openly about the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS and urged leaders across Africa to confront the epidemic directly instead of remaining silent.
In 2008, he received the Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership for promoting democracy, good governance and public health reforms during his tenure.
After retiring from office in 2008, Mogae continued participating in regional and international diplomacy, including work on African governance and climate initiatives.
Leaders across Africa continued to mourn him on Friday, with many describing him as one of the continent’s most respected democratic leaders and economic reformers.
Mogae is survived by his wife Barbara and their children. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Botswana government in the coming days.
