FKF Slapped with Ksh 2.5M Fine After Security Breaches at CHAN Opener

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fined the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) KSh 2.5 million (about USD 20,000) for serious security lapses during Kenya’s opening CHAN 2024 match against DR Congo at Kasarani Stadium.
According to CAF’s security report, multiple infractions: a stampede at Gate 11, unauthorized access into restricted Public Security Areas (PSA), a motorcycle weaving through the crowd, fans setting fires behind Block 18, and blocking access to the VVIP area—including a member of the South African President’s protective team.
The total fine included Ksh 644,500 (USD 5,000) for the stampede and unauthorized entry, Ksh 1,289,000 (USD 10,000) for assaulting CAF officials and obstructing guests, and an official warning over the stadium fire. All fines must be paid within 60 days.
CAF also fined FKF Ksh 644,500 (USD 5,000) for a separate earlier incident during the Morocco vs Angola match—half of which (Ksh 322,250) is suspended, provided no further issues arise during the tournament.
These events raise fresh concerns about Kenya’s event security management as the national team prepares for its second Group A match against Angola at the same venue.
Local Organizing Committee (LOC) chair Nicholas Musonye had earlier warned of potential sanctions should FKF fall short of CAF protocols, stressing to Kenyans to be vigilant and responsible to avoid such shortcomings.
