FIFA has rejected the suspension of Hussein Mohammed, Acting Secretary General Dennis Gicheru and National Executive Committee member Abdullahi Ibrahim, declaring the move unconstitutional and inconsistent with the Football Kenya Federation constitution.
The decision follows a leadership dispute within Football Kenya Federation after a section of NEC members voted to suspend the three officials over allegations linked to financial impropriety involving funds connected to preparations for the African Nations Championship.
Reports indicate that nine NEC members backed the suspension resolution during a controversial meeting that also sought to install FKF deputy president McDonald Mariga as acting president pending investigations.
However, Hussein Mohammed and his allies immediately challenged the legality of the meeting, arguing that it had not been convened in accordance with constitutional requirements outlined in FKF statutes.
The FKF president maintained that the meeting was neither called by the president nor requested by at least half of NEC members as required under the federation’s constitution, making the resolutions invalid from the beginning.
Following the suspensions, FIFA and the Confederation of African Football launched inquiries into the matter and requested official documents, explanations and records related to the disputed NEC resolutions.
FIFA’s review reportedly focused on whether due process had been followed, whether the suspended officials had been granted a fair hearing and whether the disciplinary procedures complied with both FKF statutes and international governance standards.
After reviewing the matter, FIFA concluded that the suspensions could not be recognised because the process failed to comply with constitutional procedures governing executive and disciplinary decisions within the federation.
The ruling effectively restores Hussein Mohammed, Dennis Gicheru and Abdullahi Ibrahim to their respective positions within FKF while weakening attempts by rival officials to remove them from office.
The dispute has triggered renewed concerns about instability within Kenyan football administration at a time when the country continues preparations for regional and continental football competitions.
Kenya has previously faced sanctions and suspensions from FIFA over football governance disputes and political interference, with past crises temporarily affecting the country’s participation in international football activities.
FIFA’s latest intervention is seen as an effort to prevent another governance crisis while reinforcing the importance of constitutional order, proper disciplinary procedures and institutional stability within football federations.
The developments are expected to increase scrutiny on FKF’s financial management systems, leadership structures and decision-making processes as investigations into the alleged misuse of funds continue.
Attention is now likely to shift toward whether further disciplinary action or internal reforms will be undertaken within FKF as pressure mounts to restore confidence and stability in Kenyan football administration.
