Kenya’s new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson, Erastus Edung Ethekon, was officially sworn in today during a ceremony at the Supreme Court in Nairobi.
Also sworn in were six new commissioners: Ann Njeri Nderitu, Moses Alutalala Mukhwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor Hassan, Francis Odhiambo Aduol, and Fahima Araphat Abdallah. Their appointment marks a significant step toward rebuilding the Commission ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking after taking the oath, Ethekon reassured Kenyans of his commitment to safeguarding electoral integrity.
"My first loyalty is to the people of Kenya. I wish to assure Kenyans that their voices will be heard and count in the coming elections," he stated.
He emphasized that the Commission’s mandate must be anchored in constitutional values and driven by public trust.
"Today marks the beginning of our service to the people of Kenya, and we must approach this sacred duty with absolute commitment guided by the Constitution and the expectations of every Kenyan," said the new chair.
Ethekon also appealed to all citizens to support the electoral process, noting that democracy is a collective effort.
"A credible election is not the responsibility of IEBC alone; it is a national responsibility," he added.
The new team is now tasked with restoring public confidence in the IEBC and steering preparations for the next national polls.
