Emurua Dikirr Constituency in Narok County is today holding a closely watched parliamentary by-election to fill the vacant seat left by the late former MP Johana Kipyegon Ng’eno. The contest has attracted national attention due to its competitive political dynamics.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has confirmed that 44,353 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots across the constituency. Voting is taking place in 94 polling stations spread across four wards.
Polling stations opened at 6:00am and are scheduled to close at 5:00pm, with security agencies deployed to ensure a peaceful and orderly voting process throughout the day.
This by-election follows the death of Johana Ng’eno, who had served as the area Member of Parliament for several years and was a dominant political figure in the region.
His passing created a politically significant vacancy, triggering intense competition among parties seeking to secure influence in the South Rift region.
Five candidates have been cleared by the IEBC to contest the seat in what has been described as a highly competitive race.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is fronting David Keter, popularly known as “Dollarline,” who emerged as the party’s nominee after a competitive internal selection process.
Keter has been conducting an extensive grassroots campaign, positioning himself as the continuity candidate aligned with the ruling party’s national agenda.
Vincent Rotich, running under the Democratic Change Party (DCP), is also seen as a strong contender, drawing support from sections of traders and youth groups.
The Party of National Unity (PNU) has fielded Desma Cherono, the only prominent female candidate in the race, who has focused her campaign on inclusivity and local development.
Other candidates include Gideon Koech of the National Vision Party (NVP), who has emphasized agriculture and youth empowerment in his campaign messaging.
Kenneth Kiprono of the Republican Liberty Party (RLP) has also been in the race, campaigning on governance reforms and accountability in public leadership.
The contest is largely seen as a two-horse race between UDA and DCP, though analysts note that smaller parties could influence the final outcome depending on voter turnout.
As voting continues, attention is now shifting to turnout levels and early vote trends, which may provide an indication of the direction of the final results expected later in the day or overnight.
