Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Kipyegon Ng’eno is among the six feared dead in a helicopter crash in Mosop, Nandi County.

Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johana Kipyegon Ng’eno has died after a helicopter crashed and burst into flames in Nandi County on Saturday afternoon. Authorities confirmed the legislator was among six people killed in the accident.

The crash occurred in the Chepkiep area of Mosop Sub-county, where residents reported seeing the aircraft descend rapidly before a loud explosion was heard. Thick plumes of smoke were visible from several kilometres away.

The helicopter, identified as an Airbus Helicopters H125, reportedly lost altitude shortly before impact. Witnesses said the aircraft appeared to struggle mid-air moments before going down.

Police and emergency response teams were dispatched to the scene shortly after the crash. However, the intensity of the fire hampered immediate rescue efforts, with all six occupants declared dead at the site.

Investigators recovered personal items from the wreckage that assisted in identifying the victims. Among them were belongings linked to the MP and other passengers.

One of the victims was reported to be an officer attached to the Kenya Forest Service, though authorities have yet to release the full list of those who perished pending notification of families.

Flight tracking data indicated that the helicopter had departed from the vicinity of Wilson Airport earlier in the day. Details regarding its intended destination and purpose of travel were not immediately disclosed.

Security officers cordoned off the crash site as aviation experts began preliminary assessments. Debris from the aircraft was scattered across a wide area, underscoring the force of the impact.

Officials from relevant aviation authorities have launched a formal investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Factors such as weather conditions, mechanical failure and pilot handling are expected to be examined.

Ng’eno had served as MP for Emurua Dikirr since 2013, securing re-election in subsequent polls. He was regarded as an outspoken figure in national politics and an influential voice within his constituency.

News of his death triggered an outpouring of grief from political leaders and constituents, with tributes describing him as a dedicated public servant committed to development initiatives in his region.

Authorities said a comprehensive report will be released once investigations are complete, as families of the victims begin mourning and the country comes to terms with the sudden loss of the six lives in the tragic accident.
