Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Collins Oyuu speaks after securing a second five-year term unopposed.

Collins Oyuu has been re-elected unopposed as Secretary-General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers for another five-year term following the union’s national elections held on April 3, 2026. The outcome cements his leadership at the helm of one of Kenya’s most influential labour organizations representing teachers across the country.

The elections, conducted at the Tom Mboya Labour College, were largely uncontested, with Oyuu retaining his seat without a challenger. His unopposed return reflects growing confidence among union delegates in his leadership style and the direction he has taken since assuming office.

Oyuu’s new term will run from 2026 to 2031, during which he is expected to continue championing the welfare of teachers, including pushing for improved salaries, better working conditions, and enhanced professional support. His tenure comes at a time when teachers are increasingly demanding reforms in the education sector.

In his acceptance remarks, Oyuu pledged to intensify efforts to secure better terms for teachers, promising to build on gains made during his first term. He emphasized unity within the union and the need for a strong collective voice in negotiations with the government and other stakeholders.

At the same time, Patrick Karinga was elected unopposed as the National Chairperson of KNUT, taking over a crucial leadership role that works closely with the Secretary-General in steering union affairs. His election further underscored the calm and consensus-driven nature of the polls.

Other key positions within the union were also filled without contest, including that of Deputy Secretary-General, highlighting a broader trend of internal agreement and stability within KNUT’s top leadership ranks. Only a few lower-tier positions attracted competition during the exercise.

Observers noted that the largely uncontested elections point to a period of internal cohesion within KNUT, a shift from past years when leadership wrangles occasionally disrupted union activities. Delegates from across the country participated in the process, which was described as orderly and transparent.

With a renewed mandate, Oyuu and his team now face the task of navigating emerging challenges in the education sector, including policy reforms, teacher shortages, and ongoing negotiations with the government. Expectations remain high among members that the union will deliver tangible improvements in their professional and economic well-being over the next five years.
