Bergvall Submits Tottenham Exit Request Over Game Time Concerns

Lucas Bergvall has informed Tottenham Hotspur that he wants to leave the club during the summer transfer window as he seeks regular first-team football, with the Sweden international believing a move elsewhere would better support his development. The 20-year-old is currently away on international duty at the FIFA World Cup and has communicated his intentions to Spurs ahead of the new season.

Bergvall is understood to have requested a fresh start after growing concerned over his playing time under head coach Roberto De Zerbi. Despite being regarded as one of the club's brightest young talents, the midfielder believes his pathway to consistent minutes has become increasingly limited.

The Swedish midfielder joined Tottenham from Djurgårdens IF in July 2024 after rejecting interest from several leading European clubs, including Barcelona. Spurs secured his signature on a long-term contract running until June 2031, viewing him as a key investment for the future.

Bergvall made an encouraging impression during his debut campaign, featuring regularly across domestic and European competitions while showcasing his composure on the ball, passing range and tactical intelligence. His performances earned praise from both supporters and coaching staff.

However, his involvement declined towards the end of last season. Bergvall started only one of Tottenham's final six matches and played just over 100 minutes during that period as competition for places in midfield intensified.

Tottenham have strengthened their squad this summer and continue to pursue additional midfield reinforcements, a factor that has reportedly contributed to Bergvall's concerns over securing regular first-team opportunities during the 2026-27 campaign.

The player is understood to favour a permanent move rather than another season of limited appearances, although a loan deal has also been discussed as a possible solution should Tottenham decide against selling him outright.

Several clubs across the Premier League and Europe are monitoring the situation, with Bergvall's age, technical ability and international experience making him an attractive target. Tottenham are expected to receive interest once the transfer window gathers pace.

Despite the transfer request, Tottenham remain in a strong negotiating position as Bergvall is under contract until 2031. The club is therefore under no financial pressure to sell and is expected to demand a significant fee if they agree to his departure.
