Women Representatives Call For Increased Funding For PWDs
Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo now says the government should increase funding for the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) to enable the leaders to reach out to more specialized groups in society, with a particular focus on persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Speaking at Kolanya primary school in Teso North with her counterparts, Omanyo noted that the current allocation of Sh.33 million to Woman Reps is not enough to support the needs of PWDs in their constituencies.
"The affirmative action fund doesn't match the number of people we encounter in our counties," said Busia Woman Rep Catherine Omanyo. "Busia for instance has 7 constituencies and the number of specialized PWDs keeps growing."
Omanyo added that PWDs have great potential if their talents can be recognized early in their lives. She urged the government to increase funding for programs that support PWDs, such as education, vocational training, and entrepreneurship.
Kwale Woman Rep Fatuma Masito echoed Omanyo's sentiments, saying that the current funding for PWDs is "a very tiny budget". She called on the government to increase the allocation to Sh.100 million per county.
Omanyo spoke on her second day of padding the girls' drive (distributing pads to school girls) across the county, she also distributed over 10 wheelchairs across the county, under the Catherine Omanyo Foundation in partnership with Scoon Kenya.
