Wiz Khalifa faces 9 months in a Romanian prison for smoking a joint while performing there in 2024
American rapper Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in a Romanian prison following an incident in which he allegedly smoked cannabis on stage during the Beach, Please! festival in Costinești. The ruling was handed down by the Constanța Court of Appeal on Thursday, December 18, and is considered final.
The case stems from July 2024, when Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, was found in possession of over 18 grams of cannabis while performing. A lower court initially fined him 3,600 lei (approximately $830) in April 2025, but prosecutors appealed, seeking a harsher sentence, which led to the current prison term.
Romanian authorities emphasized that Khalifa’s public use of cannabis, particularly in front of a largely young audience, normalizes illegal drug use and constitutes “ostentatious conduct” that could influence impressionable fans. Judges cited this as a key reason for imposing the jail sentence.
Under Romanian law, possession of cannabis for personal use is criminalized and can carry prison terms of up to two years. The appeals court’s decision underscores Romania’s strict stance on drug offenses compared with more lenient regulations in other countries.
It is not yet clear whether Romanian authorities will seek extradition from the United States, as Khalifa is a U.S. citizen. His legal team has not commented on whether they will challenge the ruling or take steps to address it through international legal channels.
