๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ Why is Your Social Media Timeline Covered in Purple Emojis?

Your social media timeline is flooded with a wave of purple emojis and profile pictures. This sudden shift isn't just a coincidence; it's a deliberate digital declaration, a visual signal meant to draw you in for a massive show of solidarity against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

This digital campaign is amplifying awareness ahead of the planned March Against Gender-Based Violence on November 21st, pushing the urgent message: "Stop Gender-Based Violence. Speak. Act. End It."

The movement states that every act of GBV is not just an individual tragedy but a deep-seated systemic failure that fractures communities, silences future generations, and severely deepens existing inequalities across the continent.

However, behind the symbolic purple heart lies a painful truth, particularly for one of the most marginalized groups: women and girls with disabilities.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), women with disabilities are 2 to 4 times more likely to experience GBV than women without disabilities.

Specifically in Kenya, a 2022 GBV Prevalence Survey revealed that 21% of women with disabilities have faced physical or sexual violence, yet only 1 in 10 of these survivors sought help.

Furthermore, grassroots reports from counties like Nairobi, Kisumu, and Kakamega show that girls with intellectual or sensory disabilities are frequently excluded from essential violence prevention programs and accessible survivor support services.

The campaigners stress that the ongoing challenge is not only preventing the violence but also ensuring that support systems are inclusive and accessible to those who need them most.
