As Deaf Awareness Week draws to a close, the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), in collaboration with the Deaf community and other stakeholders in Wajir, commemorated the event under the theme, "No Human Rights Without Sign Language Rights."
According to a social media post by the council, the celebration was a significant step toward amplifying the voices of the Deaf community and advocating for dignity, inclusion, and justice.
The day's events provided a platform to celebrate Deaf culture and raise awareness about the crucial importance of sign language as a fundamental human right.
The Chief Guest, Mr. Joseph Etyang, a Board Director at the NCPWD, reaffirmed the council’s commitment to breaking down barriers and forging new paths to equality for all persons with disabilities.
He highlighted that this commitment is now enshrined in the new 2025 Disability Act. The celebration concluded with a call to action, urging continued collaboration to ensure a more inclusive and just society for everyone.
