Veteran broadcaster and former State Master of Ceremonies Sammy Lui Wang’ondu has passed away at his home in Subukia, Nakuru County. The seasoned journalist, who was a familiar voice in Kenya’s national events for decades, died on Thursday, October 23, 2025. His family, led by his son Chris Wang’ondu, confirmed the news but did not disclose the cause of death.

Sammy Lui was widely celebrated for his long career in the media industry, having worked with the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (formerly Voice of Kenya) and KTN before becoming the official MC for state and presidential events. His articulate delivery and commanding presence made him one of the most recognisable figures in public ceremonies across several administrations.

President William Ruto led the nation in mourning the veteran broadcaster, describing him as a dedicated public servant and a respected master of ceremonies whose voice became part of Kenya’s national identity. The President praised Lui for his professionalism, humility, and unwavering commitment to excellence in his work.

“Sammy Lui’s contribution to the media industry and his mentorship of younger broadcasters will remain etched in our collective memory,” President Ruto said in his condolence message.

Tributes have continued to pour in from media personalities, former colleagues, and government officials, all hailing Sammy Lui as a patriotic communicator who helped shape Kenya’s broadcasting landscape for over three decades. Plans for his burial are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
