The United States and Kenya have signed a Sh323.8 billion health aid agreement, with the US committing Sh206.96 billion over the next five years to support health programmes across the country.
The deal targets major health challenges, including HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, and polio, aiming to strengthen Kenya’s health system and improve disease prevention and treatment. It also involves faith-based and government institutions in service delivery, marking a shift from NGO-focused aid.
Officials said the agreement is part of the America First Global Health Strategy, which prioritises direct government-to-government support and encourages co-financing by recipient countries.
Experts note that the new approach could enhance sustainability, but caution that clear accountability and transparency mechanisms are essential to ensure effective use of funds.
The pact comes amid ongoing reforms in US global health funding, following the dismantling of certain traditional aid channels, raising questions about continuity of critical services in remote and vulnerable communities.
