Sections of Nairobi CBD and metropolitans were in floods on Friday night after heavy downpour
Heavy overnight rains triggered severe flooding across parts of Nairobi, leaving an unknown number of people feared dead and causing widespread disruption across the city. Emergency response teams were deployed in several affected areas as authorities began search and rescue operations following the downpour.
Floodwaters reportedly swept through roads, residential areas and low-lying neighborhoods late at night, trapping motorists and forcing many residents to seek higher ground. Several vehicles were stranded on flooded streets as water levels rose rapidly in different parts of the capital.
Preliminary reports from rescue teams indicated that a number of people may have lost their lives during the flooding, although officials said the exact number of casualties had not yet been confirmed. Authorities warned that the toll could rise as search efforts continue in affected areas.
The heavy rains also caused significant damage to property and infrastructure, with homes and businesses in flood-prone zones reporting destruction caused by the fast-moving water. Residents spent hours trying to salvage belongings as water entered houses and shops.
Traffic movement across Nairobi was severely disrupted as major roads became impassable. Motorists were forced to abandon vehicles in some locations while others remained trapped for hours as emergency responders worked to clear blocked routes.
Emergency services, including county disaster teams and security personnel, were deployed to assist stranded residents and carry out rescue operations overnight. Authorities said teams were working around the clock to help those affected and restore normal movement in the city.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna described the flooding as a reflection of leadership failures in the management of the city. He said the situation highlighted long-standing weaknesses in urban planning and drainage systems within the capital.
The senator acknowledged that the disaster exposed systemic problems in the management of Nairobi’s infrastructure, particularly the drainage network that frequently fails during heavy rainfall. He called for urgent reforms to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Sifuna also expressed condolences to families who lost loved ones and sympathized with residents who spent the night stranded on flooded roads or dealing with damaged homes. He urged authorities to strengthen emergency preparedness and disaster response mechanisms.
Urban planners have repeatedly warned that Nairobi’s drainage infrastructure is outdated and unable to cope with the scale of rainfall experienced in recent years. Rapid urban expansion and blocked waterways have also been cited as factors worsening flooding in the city.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid flooded areas as more rainfall is expected. Rescue teams remain on the ground while officials continue assessing the full extent of damage caused by the overnight flooding.
