The Uasin Gishu County government has entered into a partnership with two international non-governmental organizations, Chair The Love and the Wheelchair Foundation, to provide enhanced support and mobility services for persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The collaboration, solidified through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Monday, will focus on delivering wheelchairs and other assistive technology to residents with physical disabilities. The initiative aims to improve their mobility, accessibility, and overall quality of life.

Lucy Ngendo, the County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Education, Vocational Training, Gender, and Social Protection, said the partnership underscores the county's dedication to inclusive service delivery.

"This collaboration encourages mutual knowledge-sharing that will enhance patient evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation," Ngendo said.

She added that the county plans to roll out wheelchair distribution drives and service clinics to ensure PWDs receive not only equipment but also vital healthcare support.

Marion Birgen, Chief Officer for Social Protection, welcomed the partnership with the American-based organizations. She highlighted that the initiative will include specialized training for county staff to improve the quality of services offered to PWDs.

"The initiative will also support wheelchair assessments and fitting clinics to ensure that beneficiaries receive the most appropriate equipment," Birgen explained.

The partnership is also expected to strengthen the patient referral system, making it easier for families to access treatment and rehabilitation services within local hospitals.

In attendance at the signing ceremony were several key officials from Uasin Gishu County, including nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA) Regina Chumba, who represents Persons with Disabilities; Regina Keen, Director for Social Protection; and Wilson Sawe, Director of Administration.

Representatives from both Chair The Love and the Wheelchair Foundation affirmed their commitment to supporting people with physical disabilities throughout the region.
