Twelve suspects linked to the June 19 unrest in Kuresoi North have been arraigned in court as police seek to detain them for 21 days to allow completion of investigations into allegations of arson, assault and destruction of property.
Investigators told the court the additional period is necessary to gather witness statements, analyse evidence and establish the involvement of each suspect before any formal charges are preferred.
The suspects are among dozens of people arrested following violence that disrupted a public event in Kuresoi North, Nakuru County. Police had initially arrested 56 people but later retained 12 for further investigations after preliminary screening.
Authorities said the disturbance broke out during a gathering attended by senior government and county leaders, forcing security officers to intervene to restore order.
Police reports indicate that several people sustained injuries during the incident, with some victims receiving treatment after suffering gunshot wounds. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the injuries.
Security agencies also recovered exhibits believed to be connected to the violence. Detectives said the items are undergoing examination as part of efforts to reconstruct events and identify additional individuals who may have participated.
Among the incidents under investigation is alleged arson that led to destruction of property, including damage to vehicles and other assets during the confrontation.
Police informed the court that investigations remain active and additional arrests could be made as officers continue tracing suspects and recording statements from witnesses.
Authorities maintained that the probe will focus on individual responsibility and accountability for acts committed during the unrest regardless of political affiliation.
The court is expected to determine whether to grant investigators the requested 21-day custodial period to conclude inquiries before making decisions on formal charges against the suspects.
