Today, the Z Line of the Interoceanic Train derailed with over 200 passengers.
At least 13 people were killed and 98 others injured after a passenger train derailed in Mexico’s Oaxaca region, authorities confirmed on Sunday. The accident occurred on December 28 near the town of Nizanda, when the train went off the tracks while navigating a curve in southern Mexico.
The train involved was part of the Tren Interoceánico (Interoceanic Train) service, operating along the Isthmus of Tehuantepec corridor, which links the Pacific and Gulf coasts. Several carriages reportedly tipped over and crashed following the derailment, causing panic among passengers onboard.
Authorities said the train was carrying about 250 people, including passengers and crew members, at the time of the accident. Of the injured, 36 people were hospitalized, with at least five in serious condition, while others were treated for minor injuries at nearby medical facilities.
Emergency response teams, including personnel from the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), were deployed to the scene to assist with rescue operations. Ambulances, air support and specialized equipment were used to evacuate victims and secure the crash site as investigations began.
President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences to the families of the victims and confirmed that federal authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the derailment. The Interoceanic Train is a flagship infrastructure project for southern Mexico, and officials said safety reviews will be conducted as part of the ongoing inquiry.
