Three Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruits have died after developing medical complications during a scheduled training exercise at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

The exercise, described by the military as a routine endurance drill, is part of the recruits’ basic training programme aimed at building physical fitness and combat readiness.

According to KDF officials, the recruits reportedly fell ill or developed complications while participating in the drill, prompting immediate medical intervention by on-site personnel.

They were swiftly evacuated to Eldoret Regional Hospital for further care, but despite efforts by medical teams, all three recruits were pronounced dead.

The identities of the deceased have not been publicly disclosed, but the Kenya Defence Forces confirmed that the next of kin have been formally notified about the tragic deaths.

In a statement, KDF expressed deep sadness over the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and safety of its personnel.

“The Kenya Defence Forces is providing support and assistance to the families affected by this tragic incident,” the statement said.

The military announced that a thorough investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances that led to the recruits’ deaths.

Officials emphasized that the investigation is being conducted in line with established military procedures, and findings will inform any necessary safety measures in future training exercises.

Local authorities in Eldoret have also been informed, and security officers are coordinating with KDF to ensure the incident is fully documented and lessons are learned.

This incident comes as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with rigorous military training, highlighting the importance of medical readiness and monitoring during physically demanding exercises.
