Kenya joined the global community on 13 February 2026 to celebrate World Radio Day, an annual event recognising the role of radio in informing, educating, and entertaining audiences. The day, officially proclaimed by UNESCO in 2011, celebrates radio’s historical and ongoing impact in connecting communities worldwide.

This year’s theme, “Radio and Artificial Intelligence: Innovation that Empowers, Ethics that Inspire, Trust that Endures,” emphasised the growing intersection between traditional broadcasting and emerging technologies. Broadcasters were urged to adopt AI responsibly while maintaining editorial integrity.

Radio remains a critical platform in Kenya, reaching audiences in both urban and rural areas where digital infrastructure is limited. The medium continues to play a central role in public dialogue, emergency communication, and cultural cohesion.

The association with AI reflects global trends where radio stations employ technology for programme scheduling, audience engagement, translation services, and fact-checking. Media experts noted that AI could enhance efficiency but highlighted the need for ethical safeguards.

Local media institutions, including Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, hosted panel discussions on AI integration in radio. Industry leaders stressed that AI should complement, not replace, human judgment and creativity in journalism.

Government officials and regulators urged balanced innovation, emphasising that AI adoption must align with public trust and professional standards. The message reinforced the importance of ethical practices in news reporting and content dissemination.

Community radio stations also participated, hosting interactive workshops and training sessions on using technology to enhance programming while retaining local relevance and inclusivity.

Broadcasters highlighted success stories where AI tools had improved operational efficiency, such as automating routine tasks and reaching wider audiences through data-driven insights. The initiatives were framed as models for sustainable media innovation.

The celebrations reaffirmed radio’s unique ability to amplify local voices and maintain credibility in an era of information overload. Media leaders underlined that trust and audience engagement remain central to the medium’s impact.

World Radio Day 2026 in Kenya showcased the resilience of radio, its adaptability to modern technologies, and the collective commitment of the media industry to ensure that broadcasting remains a trusted, ethical, and empowering platform for all.
