THE HASHTAG: Beyond Sound

The sixth episode of the Signs TV HASHTAG podcast is here to challenge what you think you know about music. Focusing on the Deaf community, this episode hosts Douglas Munyendo, alias Lal Daggy, who not only shares with us that the deaf adore music but also reveals that they are amazing performers.
Lal Daggy is a dynamic Deaf Kenyan rapper who acquired his disability at five. He has redefined what it means to sing, using the power of sign language in his captivating performances.
Hailing from Butere and growing up in Kisumu, Lal Daggy began his musical journey by singing for the deaf community; his songs are designed to be accessible to both deaf and hearing audiences.
He incorporates voice-overs and subtitles to ensure that those who cannot understand sign language can still grasp his message.
He is also the founder of DHA (Deaf Hands Artist), a comprehensive organization dedicated to talent management, music production, nurturing talent, promoting employment, teaching sign language, advocating for the deaf, publishing, and organizing Deaf Culture events and entertainment.
A significant turning point in his career was an opportunity to perform for President Uhuru Kenyatta, which propelled him to stardom.
He debuted in the Kenyan music scene with a performance at the Sarakasi Dome, where popular artist Nonini voiced Lal's song, "Story ya Machampions."
