The deaf golfer, Isaac makokha seals Match Play title

As we celebrates the international deaf awareness week, The Vet Lab Sports Club golfer made history by becoming the first golfer club with a deaf person to clinch the Kenya Amateur Match Play Championship after beating Jay Sadhu of Royal Nairobi Golf Club 3-2 in the 36-hole final at the par 72 Vet Lab Sports Club course.

The 29-year-old Isaac Makokha, a deaf golfer. who is  a brother of Muthaiga based pro Jeff Kubwa and Eldoret based Reuben Kubwa, was four-up at the end of the first 18 holes in the match that attracted a number of golf enthusiasts.

Surprisingly, it was Sadhu who took the first hole, a lead which was however cancelled immediately by Makokha.

 Sandhu managed to recover some holes in between, in the 36-hole journey, Makokha held on with his lead all the way to the 34th hole where he divided with a par to claim the title.

Makokha in his statement said, he is so grateful to everyone who has given him support and enabled him to play well in the tournament, as he looks forward to the Magical Kenya Open next year.

Makokha, who has a wife and an 11-year-old child, says his carrier has not been easy considering that he has a disability. He says, he has been turned away from many clubs who couldn’t understand or even accommodate his condition, making it the hardest part of his career.

Isaac Makokha will now play in next year’s Magical Kenya Open at the prestigious Karen Country Club course.

He has a vision of bringing up a Golf Deaf Academy which he says that; it will be purely for charity initiative adding that, he will go an extra mile to solicit for sponsors and well-wishers who will embrace the charity idea to make the difference for persons with disabilities.
