Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s campaign tour in Narok descended into chaos on Monday after police fired teargas to disperse crowds that had gathered to receive him. Gachagua, who was in the town to campaign for DCP by-election candidate Douglas Masikonde, arrived to a heavy police presence and multiple roadblocks set up along major entry points.

The confrontation began shortly after Gachagua attempted to address supporters near Narok town. Witnesses reported that police officers lobbed teargas canisters into the crowd, forcing residents to flee in panic. The incident cut short his address and briefly threw the rally into disarray.

Gachagua, who had been wearing a protective helmet, accused the government of using state security agencies to intimidate him and block his political activities. He claimed more than a thousand officers had been deployed with the intention of preventing his rally from taking place. He further criticised what he described as deliberate attempts to frustrate his movement across the country.

Police officers at the scene did not immediately comment on the reasons behind the operation, though sources indicated that authorities had raised concerns over the lack of proper notification and crowd-control arrangements. The tension in Narok follows similar confrontations in past months, where Gachagua has alleged targeted interference during his public engagements.

The DCP party has condemned the disruption, calling on security agencies to allow all political actors space to campaign freely ahead of the upcoming by-election. The Narok incident adds to a growing string of clashes between Gachagua and law-enforcement officers, setting the stage for heightened political tensions as the poll date approaches.
