The government has released Sh4.1 billion to intensify drought mitigation efforts as the number of Kenyans facing hunger continues to rise due to prolonged dry conditions across large parts of the country.

The funding was approved at Cabinet level and is aimed at supporting emergency food distribution, water supply interventions, livestock support, and other critical relief measures in drought-affected regions.

Officials say about 3.3 million people are currently experiencing acute food insecurity, with the hardest-hit populations spread across more than twenty counties, mainly in arid and semi-arid areas.

Successive seasons of failed rainfall have severely disrupted farming and pastoral livelihoods, leading to poor harvests, drying water sources, and significant livestock losses.

Northern and eastern counties, including Mandera, Wajir, Turkana, and Samburu, continue to report rising levels of malnutrition, particularly among children, pregnant women, and the elderly.

In response, the government has indicated it will sustain drought mitigation by committing close to Sh4 billion every month to support food relief, water trucking, and nutrition programmes.

The National Drought Management Authority is also coordinating with county governments to expand cash transfer programmes and improve last-mile delivery of relief supplies to remote communities.

Authorities have appealed to development partners to complement government efforts with additional funding, warning that the situation could worsen if the next rainy season underperforms.

Analysts caution that while emergency funding is critical, long-term investments in water infrastructure, climate-resilient agriculture, and local food systems are needed to reduce future vulnerability.

For now, the government maintains that the release of Sh4.1 billion represents a decisive step to cushion vulnerable households and prevent the drought from escalating into a wider humanitarian crisis.
