The budget for State House Nairobi is set to increase significantly after officials proposed a higher allocation in the upcoming national budget. The request was presented as part of spending plans for the next financial year as the government prepares its fiscal estimates.

Officials have proposed an allocation of about KSh20 billion for the 2026/2027 financial year, marking a major rise compared to previous years. The request was outlined by Katoo Ole Metito, the Comptroller of State House, while explaining the institution’s financial requirements.

The proposed increase follows a sharp rise in spending during the current financial year. State House expenditure is projected to reach roughly KSh17 billion by the end of the ongoing budget cycle, significantly higher than the initial allocation of about KSh8.5 billion approved at the start of the year.

Government financial records indicate that spending had already exceeded KSh10 billion earlier in the financial year, surpassing the original allocation months before the end of the budget period.

Officials attribute the increased expenditure to the expansion of presidential operations and the addition of new state lodges that require maintenance and administrative support.

The office also cited rising operational costs linked to official travel, state functions, diplomatic engagements and general administrative expenses associated with the presidency.

State House serves as the official residence and principal workplace of William Samoei Ruto and is responsible for coordinating presidential duties, hosting foreign dignitaries and managing key executive functions.

The proposed budget increase has sparked debate among political leaders and economic analysts, with some raising concerns about the scale of the allocation during a period when the government has emphasized fiscal discipline.

Critics argue that higher spending at the presidency contrasts with austerity measures being implemented across other sectors as the government seeks to manage public debt and stabilize national finances.

Supporters of the proposal maintain that the Office of the President requires adequate resources to effectively carry out national leadership responsibilities and state functions.

The proposed allocation will now be examined by National Assembly of Kenya as part of the parliamentary budget review process before a final decision on the funding is made.
