Six people have been convicted in connection with the 2015 murder of former Kabete Member of Parliament George Muchai, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has announced, marking a major milestone in one of Kenya’s most high-profile political killing cases.
The convictions were delivered at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi, where the trial court found the six suspects guilty of offences linked to the violent events surrounding the legislator’s killing more than a decade ago.
Those convicted are Erick Munyera, Raphael Kimani, Mustafa Kimani, Stephen Asitiva, Jane Wanjiru and Margaret Njeri. The court found them culpable on several counts, including robbery with violence and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
According to prosecutors, the accused were part of a criminal gang involved in a series of armed robberies in Nairobi around the time the Kabete lawmaker was killed in February 2015.
Four of the suspects — Munyera, Raphael Kimani, Mustafa Kimani and Asitiva — were found guilty on multiple counts of robbery with violence after the court ruled that the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence linking them to the crimes.
Court records showed that the gang violently robbed several victims on the nights of February 6 and 7, 2015, stealing cash and property valued at more than Sh1 million while armed with firearms.
The Director of Public Prosecutions said the convictions followed years of investigations, witness testimonies and the presentation of forensic and documentary evidence during the lengthy trial.
The court heard that the violent robberies formed part of the chain of events surrounding the killing of the former legislator in Nairobi’s central business district.
Muchai was shot dead in the early hours of February 7, 2015, while travelling in his vehicle within the city. The attack shocked the nation and triggered a major police investigation.
Three other people who were in the vehicle with him — his two police bodyguards and his driver — were also killed in the shooting.
Investigators established that the attackers rammed the vehicle carrying the MP before opening fire, killing the occupants instantly before fleeing the scene.
During the investigation, authorities recovered evidence that prosecutors said linked the suspects to the robbery incidents and the broader criminal activities connected to the killing.
Sentencing for the six convicted individuals is expected to take place at a later date as the court moves to conclude a case that has remained in the judicial system for more than eleven years.
